    Crazy Andy’s Used Cars is the researcher’s reflective artistic inquiry for August 2012.

    Reflection: I spent most of August in a constant state of trying to convince others about the validity of my research. First, I presented my pilot research at the AATE conference in Lexington, Kentucky. I spent the remainder of the conference barely able to focus on the sessions and events because of my fixation on recruiting participants for my study. My business cards were planted in all sorts of interesting places. If I heard someone was a K-12 theatre teacher I tried to strike up a conversation and mention the research study. When I returned home, I finalized the prospectus and IRB application. Both of these documents are merely ways of convincing other groups that my work is valid, appropriate, and safe.

    Themes: The obvious dominant theme is that of selling: selling my work, selling my method, selling the prospectus. I spent August feeling more like a salesman than a researcher. There was also an interesting internal battle: confident researcher vs. desperate imposter. I seem to swing back and forth between the two extremes. Even at the conference I would feel that my work was important one moment and that I was a neophyte accidentally invited to a gathering of experts the next.

    Metaphor: The salesman metaphor has been lurking in my mind for weeks. To push the work to the extreme, I will go with the stereotypical used car salesman. I have certainly felt like one the last month…

    Scenario: The used car salesman in his most annoying media milieu: the locally-produced, low budget television commercial. I will give my salesman the predictable mix of confident bravado and barely hidden desperation. References to MetaScen will be woven into the discussion of cars on the lot.

    Performance: Filmed in front of green screen, video superimposed over stills of an actual used car lot.
