    We have compensated the residual chirp of the pulses emerging from the thick output coupler of our femtosecond dye laser with a sequence of four high‐refraction index prisms. Using the same prisms, we show that it is possible to compensate the great amount of dispersion due to a femtosecond multistage amplifier leading to a compact and low‐loss compensation system.

    These prisms are 45-45-90 degree prisms, which are used to direct beams at 90 degrees. Very high prism transmission achieved by using the hypotenuse face in total internal reflection (TIR). The right angle prisms are often preferable to an inclined mirror in applications involving severe acoustic or inertial loads because they combine the mounting and acoustic isolation advantages of a prism with the excellent transmission of UV grade synthetic fused silica. They are easier to mount, and deform much less than mirror in response to external mechanical stress.

    Various antireflection coating are available for the entrance and exit faces.

    All right-angle prisms listed have entrance and exit faces of identical size and shape. Triangular faces are fine ground, and edges are slightly beveled.

    Retroreflector Prisms

    Retroreflector prism has 3 mirror surfaces making angles of 90° to each other juxtaposed to form the corner of a cube with the entrance face perpendicular to cube diagonal. This retroreflector, also called trihedral retroreflector or corner cube reflector has the property that any ray entering the effective aperture will be reflected and emerge from the entrance/exit face parallel to itself, but with opposite direction of propagation. An incident beam, exactly filling the effective aperture, is reflected exactly back on itself. These properties are, within acceptance angle limits, independent of the orientation of the retroreflector. Retroreflectors therefore find frequent application in situations where orientation is difficult or impossible to control, and where a mirror would therefore be unsatisfactory. The retroreflector, like the right angle prism, based on the principle of total internal reflection (TIR). As a result, it also has very high transmission.
